The Stripe on the Moon

IMG_6014

One evening I decided to shoot for the moon. This was actually taken while it was dusk, not yet fully dark, just the settings I used made it appear darker than it was.  I would love to get even closer, but at least I can see some craters.

I often take photos of the moon, I just love it and can't help myself.  But I'm stubborn and won't use my tripod, lol.

So when I was in Missouri, and the moon was full, I had to shoot some more. It was darker out when I did these and the moon shows up as a different color too, maybe because I was in Missouri instead of Wisconsin? lol

But as I looked at the photos I had taken, for the first time ever I noticed a streak, stripe, something going across the moon. The photo above it's located towards the top and on the right.

This one shows it continuing on. The two photos were taken seconds apart and the next photo it was gone again.  Wonder what it was - any ideas?

  2. You and me...non-tripod using picture takers of the moon. Or something. Yours are MUCh better than mine though.

  5. They are awesome. I don't use a tripod either. Too much hassle, plus my remote is out of batteries, so, what's the point?
    ;)

The stripe, could it be a satellite?

  6. I love taking photos of the moon too, but yours win over mine any night :) - I don't use a tripod, for anything...just pure balance and a steady hand (not always the best when I'm excited for a shot). The stripe? No idea...pretty neat that you've caught it on camera.

  8. I love it! The second shot is my favorite. I can't begin to come up with an explanation for the stripe. Curious...

  11. Gorgeous moon photos! What range is your zoom? Mine only goes up to 200mm which isn't enough to see the craters but I can still see some detail.
    PS Crazy stripe you caught!!

  12. I have no clue about the stripe, but I love your moon shots! I also love taking pictures of the moon! I used to drive around just to get the best view at night. :)

  16. hello Lisa~ i enjoy taking pictures of the moon much more now that i can get it in focus better. but, i use a tripod and still it seems a bit out of focus, lol. i've never captured one with streaks across it though.

love those squirrel pictures below. he's right adorable.

glad you were able to visit with your whole family and get some great pics.

  18. I've taken tons of moon shots but never with results like yours. Do you think the moon shows as different colors from different locations? That would be an interesting series of shots ... one taken from each state! Not a clue what the streak is -- my first thought was a meteor, but that line is so perfectly straight.

  19. These are amazing, and would be even if you used a tripod, but even more so since you don't! That streak is weird, but cool, maybe something was flying by just then? Great shots, very impressive.

  20. Oh I love the moon! I wanted to shoot the moon when I had the 70-200 L IS but we had bad weather and I never got chance.

  21. Those photos are perfect! I really like the 2nd one, mostly because of the visible craters. It's a great reminder that the earth is just one of many, many, many planets/objects in the universe.

    Have a fantastic weekend.
