Macro Monday ~ The Feather

IMG_6090

A feather in the grass while the rain was gently falling offered itself for examination.

I found it amazing how the droplets sat upon the feather!

And I wondered what was in the water?

A small pocket (flaw?) along the edge of the feather clung to a drip. The things I see in the rain drops, are they from the rain itself, or something that was on the feather?

Macro Monday is easy to play, snap a macro (or any close-up) photo, post it on your blog and come back here and sign Mr Linky. MM started on Sept 29, 2008 - Thanx to all of you for helping make it such a fun start to the week! :)

Check out how round some of those droplets are! I guess a feather does not absorb anything, and I'm thinking whatever coats feathers should coat our cars and rain gear.

  1. Wow, those are most excellent pictures!! Some of the best feather/water pictures I've seen!

I think you are actually seeing what was inside the water drop, because it acts like a magnifying glass. Tiny bits of debris, or in one picture, it looks as if it might be feather mite eggs! Fascinating!

I'm back with you for Macro Monday this week!

  3. Wow indeed!
Amazing how those last ones look like a tiny little glass shell. It's like the droplet has magnified the ribs of the feather.
    Very impressive shots Lisa.

  4. These are great captures, Lisa. The water stays on top be cause the birds have to be water-proof, or they'd drown, or loose their ability to fly.

  5. That is very cool to see the droplets beading up like that. I was thinking that the other day about coating things we have with this sort of water repellent finish. I have some leaves in my garden that do that and I was just wondering how you could get things like coats or roads to do that. That's why the ducks and birds don't mind the rain or water so much, I guess.

  22. How exciting!!!! Feathers are a marvel of nature. These photos show how much they are waterproof. The water droplets magnify the structure of the feather. These pictures are a real gem. Thanks for sharing.

  24. I've only taken a few waterdrop photos - nothing has ever turned out as good as these. There are like beautiful little glass seashells. (My entry is I've got my eye on you- should have put my name on the Mr Linky but it was too late when I remembered)

  26. Wow! This is macro when it is as best. Amazing to see how the feather makes the drops tighten - good for the birds so they don't get wet into the skin :)
    Happy MM!
