I think were called mud pots. Whatever they're called they are pretty cool!

It looks like a dying environment, but there are flowers, elk and birds, so it must be alive in ways we cannot see.

Fascinating how you've combined the more majestic side of the grandeur of nature with its rising steam in a primordial forest of sunlit splendor, mud pots, and growth of hardy vegetation alongside of a humble, friendly White-capped Sparrow!
