the locust
I can remember as a child, I was always thrilled to find the little brown shells that locusts left behind. I rarely saw the actually locusts but the little husks offered awe and hours of imagination. Sometimes I think it would be nice to shed our outer shells and get to start anew.

PS I grew up calling them locusts, maybe it's a Missouri thing, but yes, technically they are cicadas. :) From Wikipedia: Cicadas are sometimes colloquially called "locusts", although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. They are also known as "jar flies".

I always thought that locusts looked like grasshoppers. Thanks for the education. They're actually cute, in small numbers that is.
ReplyDeleteAs always a great shot...I'd love to shed my outer skin from time to time and start over. That'd be awesome!
ReplyDeleteIs that what that is?? I thought it was a cicada.
ReplyDeleteGreat shot whatever it is.
We always saw the cicada shells on the trees when we visited my grandmother when I was very, very young. I remember the loud buzz in the summertime! What memories you just brought back!
ReplyDeleteI like your analogy of shedding the old shell, too...
They are so scary looking to me...I am guilty of calling them locust also...just last nite I said to my Hubs..."you can tell its almost August,...The locust are out!!
ReplyDeleteI actually saw one a couple of weeks ago. It was making a such a clatter because a wasp had gotten hold of it, probably stung it and was dragging it up a tree. It was such an odd site.
ReplyDeleteAmazing photograph!
ReplyDeleteGreat picture ... check out those wings! We have something in our palm trees now, making that humming noise that you either love or drives you crazy.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great picture, Lisa, and reminds me of a story about our daughter when she was around three years old. We showed her a locust shell on a tree and tried to explain what it was, and she said she didn't like it. We asked why ... and she said, "He left his face!" ... lol
ReplyDeletei wish we could shed our skins too and start over sometimes. so many things to do differently. great capture. i love listening to the cicadas. they have an interesting sound/ song.
ReplyDeletea beautiful photo...
ReplyDeleteWe call them locusts, too! I love to hear them.
