Leaving the nest

z1

For the last few days, I have watched fascinated, as the baby birds began to test their wings. They would climb up on the nest and flap like crazy. Adorable! Today, with mixed feelings, I watched the first baby leave the nest. I was awestruck by his first flight, he looked like a pro! With one hop, and a spread of wings, he easily glided to rest on a branch by his parents. I am saddened to see them leaving, but imagine the joy they must feel at soaring!

update: to be very honest, I worried about him all night! His two siblings are still in the nest and I don't know where he slept or if something has eaten him! I pray he's alright!

  1. AW! Wouldn't that be incredible, to be able to glide that way from branch to branch, and out in the open sky. True freedom! These are great shots Lisa!

  2. Rest assured that his parents hear his call -- and feed him. They may even have introduced him to the neighbors feeder already.

  3. I am sure he is fine...looks like he is more than ready to fly the coop! I can't believe you were there to capture his spreading his wings for the first time....how cool!

  4. I was just telling my sister about your baby birds and was hoping that the suction cups had held. I'm glad that all is well and they are getting ready to fly the coop. It happens so quickly!

  5. The bird is really cool, Lisa, but that background is mesmerizing. It's almost like a stream of leaves. Very pretty.

  6. Yes, the background/bokeh is fabulous. It is nerve-wracking when they fly the coop, but he will be fine...

  7. We had little screech owls one year and each day another one left the nest until all three were gone, but once one left, it never came back, so #1 is probably fine (maybe scared, but his parents are probably watching him very closely!)

such a cute little guy...and that is some very interesting bokeh you got going on there!

  8. It must have been exhilarating to watch! We will choose to believe that he/she made it and will set up housekeeping with a mate of its own next year.

  9. Wow ... already they are going? How neat to see them experience flight for the first time.
