My enemy

z3

This squirrel and I have been having a battle! It started out gentle enough, with me shooing him away from my bird feeder. He can clean the thing out in one day, and the next, and the next. . . The next step was for me to move the feeder from the shepherd's hook and hang it from a thin string from a high branch where I thought he would not be able to jump to it.

I was wrong! He found a branch close enough to maneuver to the feeder and eat he did. So I snuck up and grabbed his tail. I quickly released not wanting a terrifed squirrel attached to my arm clawing and biting. He was startled and jumped and ran off.

I thought the problem was solved. Nope, the next day he was on it, yet again, and I snuck up to the feeder and whapped his tail against its roof. He again jumped and fled the scene. Now today, as I come walking by my feeder. . . look, just look!  He looks so very smug up there!  Just out of my reach!  The battle is not over!

  2. LOL...I have to laugh because my Son inlaw is also having a battle with squirrels...one of them chewed through the gas line of his car...damage $200. He has been setting traps...he caught one yesterday and took it with him on his drive to work and let it loose far from his home. Squirrels are cute to watch but can be sooooo destructive and a big nuisance!!! Sounds like your ready for a feeder that is squirrel proof. Good luck with you battle!

  3. Be careful, don't wind up being on the wrong end of "Tom & Jerry" or "Roadrunner versus Wile E. Coyote" ;-)

  5. Too funny....are you sure you were not at my feeder yesterday? I am having the exact same battle (but it is hard to stay mad at something as cute as this) LOL I guess I will just continue to buy tons of bird food! Good luck in your "war"!

  10. So he's not as cute as he looks! You are very daring, my friend ... I'd be scared that he'd launch a sneak attack back on me when I wasn't looking.

  11. That little STINKER! I say you fill the feeder with licorice and turnips and other nasty foods (sorry there are so few foods I dislike I had to throw those out there) and give him a shock the next time he stops in for lunch.

I have to say, the images in my head of you whapping this guy's tail, and then the image of him attached to your arm, have me silently laughing my butt off here at my desk. Have to be silent because... I'm at work... lol but tears are on my cheeks. How comical.

I sure do hope you win though!!! Keep fighting the good fight!

  12. Good luck the squirrel has one main objective in life to eat, now that it has found a food source it's unlikely to let up. I suggest if possible a wire (cage) enclosure large enough to allow birds through small enough to prevent the squirrel access.

  13. Oh ... those squirrels will give up at nothing!!! I fought one a few years back and finally got him with a squirrel proof baffle thing I got at a bird store. Kind of like a big wobbly can you put below the feeder.

  14. Oh you are in for a battle, they are very good at getting into almost any feeder. We finally bought a squirrel-proof one, it has a bar that closes it when a certain amount of weight is put on it, and this one has kept them out. Now they just hang out below it, eating what the birds drop. Good luck!

  15. Easy food, the squirrel be back again and again not that he's discovered food. I remember this from when we did live with squirrels in Illinois. Good luck with that one. Maybe the peanuts will do the trick after all. ;)

  16. The battle with a squirrel could be a long one. The solution is simple however, put up a squirrel feeder filled with peanuts. It may not keep him away from the bird seed all the time but it will help.

  17. I love squirrels... what a perfect opportunity to try making one of those amazing squirrel assault courses... I bet he would be a whizz and you could get some cool photos too... if he had to do a few cool acrobatics for his peanuts... it would kind of be recompense for the cost of food...
