Brown Pelicans

IMG_4701

I don't see many Pelicans in Wisconsin, but I had a lot of fun watching them in Florida! I had never seen one in a tree. Amazing!

The fishermen would share things with them. I bet they could eat a whole pizza in one gulp!

We camped in the Keys and these guys were at our campground. So I had plenty of time to watch them.

  7. I always find pelicans the most amazing birds. Their bills are so big that they don't look as though they should be able to fly (front heavy)! They're always a treat for me to see when we're over there.

  8. They are so special and the browns were on their way to being endangered and then made a comeback. Unfortunately with the oil spill, they may have problems again as some of their nesting grounds have been inundated with oil. They are one of my favorites. When we lived on Galveston Island, I looked forward each day to seeing at least one brown Pelican. Lots of whites, but the rare brown was a real treat.

  9. A wonderful bird is the Pelican.
His beak can hold more than his belly can.
He can hold in his beak
    Enough food for a week!
But I'll be darned if I know how the hellican?

I would attribute this to an author but it appears under various names, most of them Anon.

Your beautiful photos are good to look at after seeing many sad pictures of brown pelicans coated with sludge from the BP disaster.

  12. Fantastic! My favorites are the one where the pelican is eating and where it is sitting all fat and happy, asleep in the tree.

  16. I love pelicans too. Surprisingly we are on their flight path. They fly north to nest and stop here on the way to and from. Well - not right at the Big Blue Barn - but on a lake about 20 minutes away. I've also seen them paddling along in the sloughs around here. It always excites me!
