Cedar Waxwing
I find it really funny that a couple of years ago I yearned to see a Cedar Waxwing, in my bird books I thought he was the absolute best bird to ever see. Finally, I saw one, not only one, but many, I discovered each time I came upon them that they prefer to be way up in the trees, far from me, but also in large groups. Last summer, I felt blessed to have a group in the woods across from our house. Daily, I went to watch them eat the berries from the trees. Today, a group has come back, and this year they are eating the berries on my trees! A welcome blessing.

I have them in my yard this year too. I love to hear the tinkling sound they make.
ReplyDeleteApparently if you look carefully there will be a Bohemian wax wing in the mix.
I tell you -- I never see one. All my birding friends tell me I will, but I DON'T!
what a lovely picture. this waxwing is content up there with those berries. glad you were able to finally see your waxwing and have the extra joy of seeing them eat from your trees.
ReplyDeleteFantastic shot, Lisa! Oh my gosh! I have a huge crush on cedar waxwings and just learned those SAME things about them over the last migration season (or two)! Last spring was the first time I'd seen them, in groups on a berry tree - and this year they hung around atop my trees and I KNEW it was them - and heard their calls - very cool!
ReplyDeleteLOVE love love that shot. SO nice!
Hi Lisa,
ReplyDeleteVery good picture! I think waxwings are really neat birds. Over the 4th hubby and I were camping and fishing in Montana, and one evening a pair of waxwings were hanging around. One of them even landed on my head for a moment, which surprised me a lot! They were not afraid of us at all, and seemed to find something in the fire ring delicious. One had only yellow, and the other (I'm guessing the male) had yellow and red. Hmm maybe I've a good enough picture or two for MYM & RT...
They are my most favorite birds and I have only seen them once. it was a flock of them and I have never seen one again. They are so cool looking. love your photo.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool looking bird, never seen one of these, he is a beauty! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteOh that is my dream! I even planted a tree specifically in the hopes of attracting them...I have seen one in my yard so far. A fabulous shot!
ReplyDeleteI have just learnt that males and females have the red waxy tips to their wings, if they are into their third year. Second year birds don't have the red waxy tips and they have less yellow on their tails. So, this bird is over two years old and is a female, since she has less black under her chin than a male would have.
ReplyDeleteHe's gorgeous and looks very healthy ... must be the abundance of berries ... he's getting his 5 servings of fruit a day!
ReplyDeletehe is gorgeous, gosh i wish i'd see some birds like him, haven't seen much else other than the occasional robin and a cardinal once in a blue moon.
