Some of my favorite dogs

IMG_1412

On our way into the Theodore Roosevelt National Park we saw this Bald Eagle sitting way up high.

But as we came around the next curve in the road we were greeted with a Prairie Dog community. How I love these guys. They are so fun to watch and it's intriguing to me that they all live in a little community - you never see just one prairie dog hole all by itself.

They kinda bark like my pups, how nice of them to warn their neighbors.

I wondered if this one was just chubby, or maybe getting ready to add to the community?

I think this is one of the older members of the group, she reminds me of Ma from the Golden Girls, lol.

I guess every community has a dimwit, er uh village idiot.  I don't think it would be very safe to have your hole right in the middle of the road, cars can play a game of whack-a-mole by accident.

  3. They are cute and it's a wonder how he got that hole in the road. The eagle looks so majestic sitting up high like that, beautiful shot.

  4. I love prairie dogs! Wow, that 'chubby' one looks as wide as it is tall. The first thing I thought of was, "that poor mama!" Wonder if prairie dogs have a pregnancy waddle when they walk?

  7. Great shots! Is it me or does it look like he's dug his hole there a few times but the roadmen keep filling it in?!

  8. Beautiful photographs of these delightful little creatures. Hope the one in the road didn't have to learn by experience!

  12. Great photos of the eagle and the prairie dogs. I was in Theodore Roosevelt National Park back in 2004 but was with my husband's family, and as we were tight for time. We were due to go to meet up with other family members at an outdoor show in Medora. I too was amazed at the prairie dog town and fell in love with the little guys. How I would love to go back and meander one day.

  14. How cool to see the prairie dogs in the wild. I have only seen them at the zoo. Great sighting of the Bald Eagle, they are awesome birds. Wonderful photos, Lisa!

  15. When we traveled through that area we were highly amused with the prairie dogs too! They are a much bigger cousin to the gophers that take over everything here. They can be a real nuisance - especially to animals - they can easily step in a gopher hole and get hurt.

We were so amused by the prairie dogs that we stopped and bought a stuffed one for my brother who lives smack dab in gopher land. He wasn't as amused as we were though!

  16. We have very small gophers (official name Richardson's Ground Squirrel) and in the spring there are SO many of them dead on the roadside because they don't seem to teach their children about look-to-the-left-and-look-to-the-right-and-look-to-the-left-again.
Your prairie dog photos are just super. And I'll bet that eagle thought they would make a super supper, too.

  17. The prairie dog looks so cute!
I have never seen one in real life. But I think it looks little like a capybara that I love so much!

  18. How fun it was for you to get all those great photos. I think I could spend a lot of time there. We have many bald eagles in our neighborhood, but I usually see them perched on a telephone pole or street lamp while I'm driving. I've seen two fly overhead very low just as I was coming out of work. No photo op there either.

  20. Nooooo... not prairie dogs! Scary, scary prairie dogs. They look all cute and innocent until they escape from their cage and chase down your daughter and try to attack you as you attempt to corral it. Mmmmhmmm... that's a true story.

  21. Isn't that eagle silhouetted against the blue sky beautiful? And the prairie dogs have such earnest little faces. The chubby one's obviously been in their Halloween candy.
