Birds in the hood

IMG_2720

I'm ever amazed at the variety of birds right in my neighborhood. It makes me wonder if they've always been there and I just didn't notice.

I can't tell you what birds shared my yard in Missouri, or in Texas, but I can tell you who comes through in Wisconsin. Maybe I never had a chance to look up while raising the kids and I only now have the opportunity to look around.

{Oh sorry guys that I neglected to tell you the first photo is Blue Heron and the second a Northern Flicker. As Michelle mentioned, this Flicker is the male, I have shown the female before, over here.}

  1. That last bird is beautiful. I've never seen one like it. What is it?

  2. Lovely heron and wonderful northern flicker-male-photo. (Northern Flickers are large, brown woodpeckers with a gentle expression and handsome black-scalloped plumage. On walks, don’t be surprised if you scare one up from the ground. It’s not where you’d expect to find a woodpecker, but flickers eat mainly ants and beetles, digging for them with their unusual, slightly curved bill. When they fly you’ll see a flash of color in the wings – yellow if you’re in the East, red if you’re in the West – and a bright white flash on the rump. ....Present only in males is a malar stripe, or mustache, extending from the base of the bill downward below the cheek)

  3. Beautiful and excellent photography, Lisa!

    I know what you mean about the kids being raised and having more time. But somehow as we get older we manage to be SOOOOO busy that a week passes in a day....right?

  6. Great shots Lisa - the birds here are very elusive, yet I am determined! I still have to get my birdfeeder up and hopefully that will lure them in. Hope you are having a great weekend!

  12. Great shots! I've tried several times to photograph egrets/herons around here with no luck-- sometimes they fly low across my land just to tease me.
