Reader Question

I'm hosting this week's Fun Monday, welcome aboard!

I know, I know, I was the one who came up with this question thing, but boy it was hard!  See, hubby suggested ‘20 Questions’ and I told him that would be too much work for the people coming over to comment, so maybe 5 would work, but wow, we have so many players that that would still be a lot of work, so I cut it down to one question.

‘Only one?’  I whine!  I have a bunch of things I would like to know about my readers but since I gave the limitation of one question I guess I need to abide by my own rules.  Maybe I’ll ask a question periodically until I’m all questioned out, but for today:
Question: If you were going to get a tattoo, what would you get, and would it have some significance?  Feel free to tell about any tattoos you do already have. (Notice how that isn’t a second question - I’m good! *wink*)

My Answer: I have been wanting to get a tattoo for a few years and I think it would be really neat to have something small, that I could add onto each year on the anniversary of my cancer survivorship. I just can’t figure out what to get, nor where to put it.  I would welcome any ideas.  PS - I’m really scared it will hurt.

friends

Since my question wouldn’t be complete without a photo, here’s my step-daughter, Marissa, and her friend showing of their tattoos. (I have shown this photo in the past).  Marissa got her tattoo to honor some of her friends who have died.  She’s currently very pregnant with our second grandson and I wonder what her tattoo looks like right now. :)

Let's go see what everyone wants to know and try to give some answers.  Or maybe we'll get to learn about a new bird, guess we'll find out when we get there.

Min, Stephanie and Margaret over at Mama Drama have eagerly volunteered to boss us around next week.

Thanx for playing!

  1. My tatoo would match my brother Matt's - a Welsh dragon on my upper arm. However, I am not sure that will ever happen. My skin is very sensitive and a tatoo might cause big problems...

  2. Let's see, I'd probably get the star and moon tattoo that Daughter Daphne had on her neck IF it guaranteed that Dad Henry Dashwood (Colin Firth) would come in my room while I'm sleeping and be amused that I have the symbol that had meaning for my mother and him in their young hippie days. What-t-t you say? This doesn't mean anything unless you saw the movie "What a Girl Wants"! If you did see the movie, you'd agree. . .

  3. OOOH, I forgot to sign up, and I can totally participate in this one. Can you add me to the list?

And as far as the tattoo...Like you I've always wanted to get one, and wouldn't do it until I knew exactly what I wanted. This year I figured out what I want, and am planning to get it VERY SOON (as in, quite possibly, next weekend). It will be a cross with a butterfly, signifying my sort of "re-birth" or what have you this year with my faith. Oh, and I'm getting it on my shoulder blade.

  4. Thanks for hosting this week Lisa!!

I have a tatoo on my ankle, it is a butterfly...actually it is quite a story on how I got it..I may have to post about it someday!! I do want another one...a fairy on my right upper back. I actually had an appointment to get it done last year but I had to cancel it...I cannot find the artwork for it..I have an idea in my head but I can't find it and I am not an artist. When I do see what I want I will definitely save the picture and get it done.

But I have so far had 4 kids without any sort of pain meds..si hey I can handle a tatto!! Ankle area really hurts and I have heart the top of the foot does...which is where I want to get one!!!
So I can't wait to see what you get!!!

  6. No tattoos for me! I can't think of anything I would want permanently on me. But the girls above are gorgeous!

  7. First, can you sign me up? I'm always late anymore...argh

And second, great question. I have a butterfly on my lower right back/hip. It's not a traditional butterfly, more asian inspired. It hurt. Badly. I almost passed out. But I'm glad I did it.

  8. Yes, it will hurt a little. In fact when i had my heart attack they asked me on a scale of one to ten what the pain and i figured the tat was my nine and the heart attack didnt really hurt that bad maybe a 5. I love my red long stem rose on the inside of my left calf and if i wasnt allergic to the ink (yea like anyone would know THAT ahead of time) I would have more body art. Mine took an hour and it hurt after! NOT during. Like little pin pricks. Go for it -I just love mine and you would be surprised how much it opens up conversations with the most unlikely and wonderful strangers! BUT try a rub on first -see if you can live with it. Look at a kids coloring book or a picture the same size as the tat you want -then get that stuff to make a decal from a craft store and rub it on the place you want. My rose is about 7 inches long and 2 inches wide -a LOT bigger than I thought I wanted at first/ but I got carried away and now that it is my only one EVER -I am glad I didnt opt for the little rose on my ankel Enjoy!

  9. I never liked tatoos and now even less. It was very fashionable in the 70th and a lot of people did. Now you should see the tatoos 38 years later and the same people are not very happy at all with their tatoos anymore. On a grandpa or grandma it looks kind of funny !

  10. I don't have one but I want one someday. I haven't decided what yet though. Although I would like something for my kids

    ReplyDelete
  11. That's a hard question because I don't think I'll be getting a tattoo any time soon. If I did though, I'd want to pick a design that would represent something that has been/will be meaningful to me for a long time - maybe a VW Bus (I've had one for 12 years), or a clover leaf (my dog's name) -- or maybe I'd think about getting one to represent a life changing experience, like if I accomplish something really challenging that changes me. If I did get a tattoo though, it would be something small and simple. I think Angelina Jolie's tattoo are pretty interesting. She's got the coordinates of where all of her children are born tattooed on her.

  12. Hi Lisa, Thanks for visiting my blog! What a fun Fun Monday question. I recently had a conversation about this very question with my husband. I couldn't decide what I would get as a tattoo. (But I guess it's a moot point anyway, since I am way too wimpy to ever get one.)

    ReplyDelete
  13. If you had asked me that a few years ago I would have said no way. Im not keen on a lot of tattoos. I do however like the fashion of one on the lower back. I have thought about it a bit but still not sure if I will go ahead. I would have a small eagles head in the centre with celtic designs to the side. Eagle is my mayan day sign (unlike star signs these are based on your actual birth date rather than month). I also like dragons but can't see myself plastering one on my skin forever!

  14. During my "shot out of a cannon" days, I always thought I wanted a tatoo of a black widow spider over my ankle. There was no significance other than I was going through a very "wild" time in my life...having just survived breast cancer and a divorce...at the same time ! (I had one of those "John Edwards-type husbands," but I wasn't so forgiving as Elizabeth ! kicked his sweet a$$ to the curb !
Later, I decided instead of a black widow, I would get a Kokopelli above my ankle.
Now, I've decided I'll just use those lick 'em and stick 'em "tramp stamps" as they are sometimes referred to.
(My youngest has two of them. One you can see on her foot in today's post if you look closely.)

Thanks for hosting today. Lots of fun.

  15. I'm afraid of the pain, too. That's probably the only reason I haven't gotten on eyet. I'd put mine on my ankle or shoulder blade, I think... but if I really got the cajones for one, and pain was no object, I'd do a Jeff Corwin tattoo. NO, not a picture OF Jeff Corwin, but a copy of the tat he has...a coral snake wrapped around his upper arm. it is REALLY cool and I have always loved it. No real deep significance to it. I like snakes and Florida nature and I think it would be prettier than an alligator ;)

Now, two of my friends have tats, and I'm wondering if they're going to make it here to comment. I'll be keeping my eyes open!

Thanks for hosting, Lisa, as always you came up with a really fun idea!

  16. I'm not a participant in Fun Monday, but I couldn't pass on the opportunity to comment about tattoos. I have two of them ... and wanting to get another one. My first I got when I was in my 20s. My 2nd I got just before turning 30. Now that I'm in my 40s I want my 3rd one. I already have the design made up. It will be my last because I can't see myself with a totally inked up body.

I hate needles and cannot stand pain ... not quite the ideal tat candidate. Other than the blue leaf on the back of my ankle, the pain was tolerable. No one ever tells you how awful the healing process is. The itchy scabs are way worse than getting the tat.

  18. I love tatoos "ON OTHERS" None for me as I couldn't have a perment mark without wanting change as I change so much so often.
My son has a monster in works...I laugh as I always tell him " So this is how you see me huh?"
It is God awful for sure and BIG!
I will have to see the others art.
    Great entry.
    The girls look beautiful.

  19. My grandfather had a tattoo on his left forearm of two hands shaking. If I were to get one myself, I'd probably get the same only I'd get it maybe on my deltoid where it could be covered by clothing. Tattoos on nurses make some people nervous!

I'll probably never get a tattoo; I tend to cheloid, so that would be just really ugly!

By the way, that photo of Marissa and her friend is absolutely gorgeous!!!

  20. I have wanted to get a tattoo for a while but haven't because my husband HATES them. I didn't think it was prudent to get something permanent done that my husband loathes! However, if we ever divorce ;0) I will get a compass rose on my lower back.

    ReplyDelete
  21. The two girls are indeed beautiful but having a tattoo? Nope never ever has appealed to me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. They are pretty girls who carry them well!

  23. I already have a few (ok, eight) tattoos and each of them have meaning to me! My favorite is probably the phoenix I got a few years ago...it's in blues & greens (traditional colors for a phoenix would be reds/oranges/yellows, fire colors) and is absolutely gorgeous. My most recent tattoo is three words on the side of my left middle finger..."Why so serious?" I've got a bit of an obsession with Heath Ledger's portrayal of The Joker. If you'd like to see them, here's a set in flickr:

Oh and here's my question: http://fondofsnape.com/?p=1832

  24. I would never get a tattoo because of the permanence of them. I think small tattoos on young people look great (as do the girls in your picture) but I've seen to many wrinkly old people with tattoos and it was not a good look.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i'll answer about the tattoo later. just wanted to let you know you have a broken link. we start and end with family doesnt work.

    ReplyDelete
  26. hi there i was made aaware my link here doesn't work and It doesn't!

    ReplyDelete
  27. I only have eight tattoos. Seven rhinocerouses and one little piggy. One word of advice, it's not so important that you be sober when you get this...just make sure the tattoo artist is.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't have a tattoo, but I don't object to them, in fact, I like them. I think it's more of a generational thing. If I were to get one, I think it would be flowers. Both of my daughters have floral tattoos, and we're a lot a like, my daughters and I. You could do something like that, a flower for each year; or a star, something small.

    ReplyDelete
  29. oops also the bucket list link does not work.

i wanted to get a tattoo before i got pregnant. but i didnt ever get around to it. couldnt figure out what to put. maybe something will come to me after the baby is born. my hubby wants an anchor (for his navy time) and wants to figure out how to use baby's birthdate in it somehow...
if you want to, you might try 'covering' any scar you might have with a ribbon and add the years around the ribbon as you go along?

    ReplyDelete
  30. I have an old tatoo on my left wrist of a heart and vine. I want to have it covered by a tatoo of a phoenix because, to me, it symbolizes my health situation and it would serve to remind me that even though there will be some fierce down days and some really rough times, I will have good times, too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. If I ever complete a marathon I might get a very small 26.2 tattooed below my hipbone where you couldn't see it. I doubt it though.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I've been on the road to tattoo alley many times but fate or someone else's common sense prevailed. Mostly I was too drunk. I was going to get a tattoo of the Cheshire Cat on by butt.
I think you should do it as a badge of honor.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I promised myself a tattoo for my 40th birthday and three years later I still haven't had it done! WHEN I eventually get to it, I am going to have a Welsh Dragon with "Made in Wales" over the top and "Circa 1965" on the bottom.

Not quite decided where it's going to go but probably on my lower back.

Great question and thanks for hosting!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Probably now that I have kids I would get a Buttercup and then the initials of my other children.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would get the name of my daughter, inside angel wings, on my left shoulder blade. My kid wants a barcode tattoo of her birthdate on her waist!

    ReplyDelete
  36. You could get chicken feet on your ankle like the Dixie Chicks every time they have a number one hit. 'Course, I suppose after a while it would look like hair on your legs.

    ReplyDelete
  37. When Marissa graduates from High School, we are planning to get tattoos together. I would like to get one tiny flower, either a plumeria, or rose on the toe next to my big one. Not a big tattoo. Not sure what Marissa wants to get if she wants one by then or not.

Great question Lisa. You are the hostess with the mostest.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sorry but tattoos have never held any appeal for me, although I can appreciate that some are very attractive.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I am not a fan of tattoos for various reasons. However I like the idea of using them to honor loved ones. Thanks for a fun Monday! You sure got a big turnout on this one! I did manage to find one brave cheese maker; that's gotta be worth something.

    Thanks for hosting!!

  40. I always thought that tattoos are not for me partly because of the pain and partly because of the cost. However, if I did consider getting a tattoo, perhaps a flower artfully entertwined in a biopsy scar. If that is not practical, I think that tattoos in the small of the back are attractive. I might look at a catalog to decide what the tattoo should look like. I would like something delicate and feminine.

  41. I’ve thought about getting a ‘butterfly’ tattoo on my leg (just above my ankle) for a long time … and am about to do it … one of these days ;--)
    Hugs and blessings,

  42. I have no idea what FUN Monday is, but I will answer the tattoo question! I have five tattoos, all that I got when I was 18-19. Four of them were on a whim and I regret each of those, a huge angel above my ankle, a rose on my breast(will be a vine/tree by the time I get done having kids!) , a moon on my belly (um, its almost a full moon instead of the half-moon it was when I was skinny!), then I have a gecko on my foot that was bright purple/turquoise when I got him (in Mexico on Spring Break) and he has faded so much, now looks like a bruise!
The only one I still like is the only one I planned, a sun on my lower back in the colors lime green, purple, teal, blue.
I should've ;listened to my mom when she told me one day I would regret it!!!!!!!

  45. I have two the first I got when I was 18 one of those home made one as a betroval - mirror image lizards (a sign of tranquility) one on his right side the other on my left. At age 36 I got a lizard covering the fist up (one because it was looking more and more like a broken blood vessel and less like a lizard. secondly because it was time to move on the love of my life was gone but I still needed to live.) At 54 I may get a third and it will depend on where I am in life.

I like the idea of a new birth tatoo, but remember you need to be sure what you want as it will be with you. I say try the temp or a hena on first to see if it is what you want. than pick you own art and go from there.

  47. I love tattoos. I'm hooked.
I have a tribal on my arm -- first tattoo -- so I have an excuse.

I also have Kokopelli on the tops of both of my feet.

I have a large snail on my upperarm, surrounded by a tiger lily and fuchsias.. It is currently incomplete because I got pregnant and had to put a hold on the work. But someday I will finish it.

I want one more -- a back peice. A very large and detailed one. But I can't share the design because someone will want to steal it. Tee hee.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I would love to get a tattoo but I am such a wimp I can't face the pain! I think I might get a new moon as that plant rules my star sign or a snake as that's my Chinese year sign.
I'd have it on my lower back so it wouldn't always be on show.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Well, I am a lil bummed I missed this FM. I will answer your question though. I have one tattoo and it HURT! But I am a big baby when it comes to pain and I have a fear of needles. I have a dolphin jumping over my right ankle. It is not what I had envisioned, and the chick put it on facing backwards, not forwards. I didn't notice until YEARS later that it was put on wrong. I would like more but I am not sure what or where. I am not going to get just anything. It has to have meaning. You could have the pink ribbon but have the ends of the ribbon kinda morph into bird feathers and then get a lil bird feather for every year you are cancer free. I know you didn't have breast cancer, is the pink ribbon only for breast cancer? Your possibilities are endless. Once you have an idea what you want you can go around to diff tattoo shops and tell them what you are wanting have them draw it up, you are under no obligation to get it tattooed. Someone that is a fantastic artist will blow you away with what they come up with, if they take your idea and run with it! It is so much better than the junk in the books at tattoo shops. I wish I had never gone with something on the wall. feel free to email me as that is what I should have done here! ;)

  50. I will NEVER get a tatoo, why pay someone to inflict pain on me? childbirth was enough and at least two very cute babies were born

  51. I currently have 3 tattoos. The first I got after my mom Passed away. It is ironic since she was against them and yet I got it in her memory. She when she was really sick and we did not know how long was left , I was leaving for work and trying to say bye. She seemed so out of it.. I don't know why I said it but I just yelled out "Bye I'm going to get a tattoo". Well she was suddenly all there sitting up in bed yell at me that no way was I getting a tattoo. :)
So a few months after she passed I went and spent the day at the tattoo parlor thinking it over, making sure it was what I wanted. I picked a yellow rose (her favorite) and had it put on the back of my right shoulder. I later went back and had a pink ribbon with mom in added to the rose.
I also have a small cat on my front right hip and Piglet on my right ankle.
I am in the planning stages of my next one.:)

  52. So I finally caught up and realized I hadn't even commented on yours. I have never had a tattoo and I don't think I ever will. Too scared of the pain. Gorgeous pic of your step daughter and her friend though.
