Little builder

wasp building

What do you do if you're a blogger and a wasp decides to build their home on the eave of your house? Well of course, you run out and take pictures of the process! Unfortunately, I accidentally got it wet while using the hose and he quit building.

Sorry guys, I forgot to give a timeline.  It only took him three days to get from point A (no nest) to point B (last photo), four days tops.  He was a speedy little worker.  He never came back after I inadvertantly damaged it so I finished knocking it down.

I also neglected to say that I sent my brave son (with the camera) up on a small ladder to get closer to the creature.  He waited and waited and finally the wasp came back, but Haden came running down the rungs because 'He's looking at me!', when the wasp quit looking and started working Haden climbed back up and said 'He won't look at me.' - I laughed, cuz I'm that way. :)

  1. I don't know about having a wasp in the neighborhood, but the process is quite beautiful!

  5. Pretty! We just had to eradicate a very large nest of hornets due to its location. It was dangerously low and we were afraid the kids would accidentally mess with it. We killed the adults through the hole of the nest and then dissected the nest to show the kids the inside. The larvae was still living. One of the babies was "hatching" as we watched and he ate through the tough paper like film over his hole. Then he crawled out into the wide world and flexed his wings. It was a sight to see! I got pictures too!

  8. What kind of wasp is that? Pretty cool nest he was building. Our wasps down here don't build things like that. I knwo when I see a spider in the middle of building her web, I always have to stop and watch for a few minutes. It's amazing how they know just how to do those things...

  10. That is a fine series of nature pictures. I am glad that you mentioned getting the little nest wet as the comment reminded me to go out and move the hose. :)
