Baa ba baa Bobolink

t518

Have you ever heard of a Bobolink? No, I’m not making this up. Have you ever seen one? I didn’t even know they existed until I saw this one.

It was a horrible day for photos, as you can tell by the sky. But since it was my first time seeing this strange punk rocker bird I just had to shoot. I hope someday I see one on a decent day.

He’s an odd looking fellow, no? They may love Wisconsin for the dairy land and hayfields, but they flee to South America when the snow begins to blow. Early cutting of hayfields have contributed to their decline, studies show that over 80% of the young will be killed if the hay is cut before August.

  3. Lisa, what a beautiful bird. That gold ring or patch is something. When I think of hay and the color, it might look a little bit like the color of that spot. I wonder if that's a camouflauge for them.

  4. I had heard of this bird, but had never seen it and didn't know much about them. Very sad to think of the mass killing fields. Thanks for sharing!

  12. Never heard of 'em. Then again, I live in the South where the migratory birds come for the winter. Well, some of them anyway. Cool looking birds though. Try and hold off the mowing until after Labor Day okay? We're losing enough species as it is.
