Reading Challenge, Great Year and Full Family!

bookworm

This photo is about 2 years old but it seemed appropriate, since I'm signing up for Jenner's Take a Chance Challenge (get the details here).  This is her 3rd year hosting this year long challenge but the first year I'm jumping.  I m always reading at least one book and Jenners made this challenge, simple and fun - I thought it might shake things up for me without making me jump into a genre I might not be into.  All are welcome, so if you're a reader like me come on and join up! :)

While we're on the subject of books, I am still on the fence about ereaders in general.  I'd welcome your opinions.  Way back when I got my first pda I downloaded an ebook and was so excited about the possibility of reading on the screen.  The excitement quickly faded when I discovered the ebooks were very limited and I quickly gave up the idea until more books were available.

Now most books can be found as a file and there are even gadgets made specifically for reading them on, bigger than a pda. So that has improved.  However, the ebooks are often times more expensive than a paper copy and that just gets me all riled up!  It's actually less costly for an electronic file than a printed hardback, yet they are charging us MORE - I just don't get it!  Have you found a cheap way to get books?  If I can't get the books cheaper, then I don't really guess it will matter what else the perks might be.  With Kindle I am stuck buying from Amazon and with Nook I'm stuck with Barnes and Noble - right?

I don't like that you still must use a booklight - I read most often in bed after my husband goes to sleep.  It would seem more convenient to me if I, at least had the option of backlighting the screen.  I think color would nice so I could see the covers of the books in color, like on shelfari.

The second most popular place for me to grab some reading time is while soaking in the tub - so why the heck can't they make the waterproof?

I am in love with the idea of replacing my 8-10 boxes of books with one tiny device - but concerned about losing all my library.  I love the idea of being able to search through them easily, but hate that I can't share them with friends, or pass them on. . . so, your thoughts?

I think the next couple of days are going to be pretty busy - these people will be coming over and filling up our house.  Maybe your house will be full too!

  1. I'm so glad you are joining in the challenge!!! : )

And I love love love my Kindle. You can read books in PDF format ... and I've downloaded quite a few free books from Project Gutenberg (mostly classics). I've actually found that many of the Kindle books are cheaper ... especially for newer hardcovers. I usually just get whatever is cheapest. I'd recommend it highly .. but that is just me. I don't know much about the Nook as I'm a Kindle person.

And I love love love your year in Facebook statuses ... I remember that from last year and thought it was so clever.

    Have a wonderful holiday.

My Aunt has the Kindle and taught 1st Grade for 40 years and always had a book out of the Library, she now only uses a Kindle and loves it. My 2 pennies, she liked the Nook too but the Kindle had better battery. Have a great Christmas and New Year Lisa !

  3. I have never used an ereader. I think that I am in the same place as you do. I have an entire room that is a library and I love being able to browse the books and find what interests me at the moment. Not sure I can do that with an ereader, but I am sure that is where technology is taking us. Sometimes, I like the old ways best.

  5. Hi Lisa
I have a Sony Reader which I've had for about 2 years and it can download books from anywhere as long as they're in the ePub format. So in the UK I can get them from W H Smith and Waterstones (don't know about the US though) plus any other sites I find.
But I recently got an iPad and found it great to read from - large screen, backlit, great page turning etc. but it is a little heavy although I've got used to that. You can buy ebooks from iTunes (expensive and not a vast range) but I recently downloaded the Kindle App so I can get Kindle books from Amazon too. It will also read pdf files of course. So it's more versatile than the Sony.
Hope this helps. No machine can ever quite replace the tactileness of a book!
