Spelunking?

lc1397

Does it look like I’ve been on a visit to the southwest?

lc1390

Believe it or not, these are the rest of my Ice Cave photos.

lc1391

Dennis and I have talked about walking out to them for a couple of years now. It just seems that each time we decided to go, we found a reason (it’s too cold, or it’s so far, or I just wanna stay in the warm house. . .) not to.

lc1392

So one morning, Dennis woke up at some ungodly hour, like 4 am and when he finally tired of tiptoeing around the house he splashed water on my face and pulled me out of the warm covers to go trudging a mile across a frozen lake in 8 degree weather.

lc1393

The sun was shining brightly and with the promise of warmer days arriving soon, I knew this was one of the last chances to go this year, so I didn’t complain at all too much.

lc1394

My legs got a great workout, and all the walking did warm me up, and beauty surrounded me!

lc1395

I can’t say that I regretted one minute of it.

lc1396

lc1399

To get in this cave I had to sit down and scoot, but I think it was worth it.

lc1400

That’s the opening I came through.

lc1402

SO worth it!

lc1403

I was sitting at the very back of the cave.

lc1404

It felt so secluded and quiet that I think I could have napped there. But my butt started freezing, sitting on a frozen lake will do that.

lc1405

Next year, they will all be different.

lc1406

Looking up.

lc1407

Massive sheet of ice. Easy to forget the rest of the world exists.

lc1408

I did manage to find some dainty little ice crystals, too bad I didn’t have the macro lens with me.

lc1413

Frozen waterfall.

lc1414

lc1416

And the best part is, you can touch it all you want.

  3. Those pictures are beautiful! I'm fascinated with caves - having never been in one and living in FL where the ground is seriously flat LOL I never even thought about one filled with ice. Thanks for taking us along!

  5. Wonderful, beautiful place and photos! Having been spelunking near Carlsbad Caverns when I was younger, I also find them VERY scarey! The cave I was in was full of bats and guano.... lol. But resulted in lifelong memories for me. Thanks for sharing!

  41. Beautiful - but all I can think is "BRRRR"

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow! Looks so alien at places. And I love the quality of light in some of them .. the bluish light. I think I might have felt a bit claustrophobic!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I remember the first shots you posted of these and thinking I could even overcome my mild claustrophobia for shots like this. And honestly? Now I think these caves might cure it! Those shots where the ice is reflecting back green -- and almost glowing -- those are incredible. Is this place accessible in non-frozen form too? It would be interesting to see the contrast.

These are just phenomenal... I could shoot here all day and never get tired of it.

  44. Beautiful & majestic--while at the same time giving me major heebeejeebees!! I am soooooo claustrophobic. Got nervous looking at the wonderful photos.
