The missing rib

fun mondayAND

Macro Monday is easy to play, snap a macro (or any close-up) photo, post it on your blog and come back here and sign Mr Linky(at the bottom of this post). Don't forget to visit each other. :)

I am hoping that the hostess of this week's Fun Monday, Jan, doesn't mind that I have combined FM with my Macro Monday this week. Her topic was one I just could not resist and the photos worked for my meme too. Hope there's not too much confusion with this.

Can you guess what this is? Well it's not my dog's chew bone. But Jan wanted to know what we have in our house that is unique and we'd never get rid of. I don't think anyone would want this.
LC0394
This has been hanging out in our freezer for six years. I have never touched it, it's about 2 inches long and I dumped it out of its specimen jar to a napkin for the photo, then carefully put it back and threw said napkin away.
LC0393
This, my friends, is a piece of a rib bone, and not just any rib bone. It's mine!
LC0392
September 2002, I had what's called a Chamberlain Procedure. The doctors cut out a piece of rib and operated on my lung. I had a mass in the hilar region (near where the lung meets the airway) and there was concern of the mass blocking off the opening and making the lung quit working. The doctor wanted to take out the entire lung but my oxygen level wasn't good enough on one lung so he just removed the mass. It was not cancerous.

When I woke up in ICU I found out that my mom had requested my rib for me.  She told the doctors something about my religion requiring me to have all my body parts when I am buried.  I think my boyfriend thought we were nuts, but he did eventually propose so maybe he likes nuts.

December 31st 2002, New Year's Eve, I spent in the ICU hooked up to tubes and such after going through a second surgery to put mesh in the area where the rib is missing. Apparently, you are supposed to be ok with a piece of rib missing, but my lung herniated out of the opening. I hope I never have lung surgery again!

  2. This was gross, fascinating and weird all the at the same time! It is not what I thought a piece of rib bone would look like -- I thought it would be all clean and shiny and white. Yuck. I hope you never have to go through that or any other surgery again...and you are right...I don't think anyone would want that. Not even your dog. (OK. maybe the dog. But no one else.) This is why I love your blog -- I never know what I will see next!

  4. Good heavens, Lisa! You do have the most unusual things in your freezer...

  5. OMG. Where's the BBQ sauce? You truly CAN take photos of anything.

I have my Duck Butt post up. It's here.

  8. Wow, what an interesting post. It's got to be the most unique macro shot out there. Thanks for sharing and I'm glad the mass was not cancerous. Have a wonderful week.

  9. I think that must be the most original and special thing one keeps for today's FM ! and in the fridge, lol ! This time I can't say "beautiful picture" ! Only admire the "macro"

  10. Definitely an amazing macro shot Lisa. A very good one, I think you could be a biomedical photographer. Glad you are better now, and let's keep any other body parts from ending up in your freezer.

  11. ok, that's a little creepy. how long do you intend to keep it in your freezer?

so glad to see i'm not the only one playing a little early. just trying to postpone the start of the week a little longer...

  12. OMG Lisa! That's YOUR Rib! WOW!!! I have never known anyone to have their VERY OWN rib in their freezer!! I seriously thought it belonged to your dog. Well, I sure am glad that you are ok after that serious surgery and I hope you never, ever have to go through that again. Happy Monday! The pictures are great!

  13. Ewwww, that's creepy!!
I've been wrecking my brain to a topic for both Fun Monday and Macro Monday as well, but this beats it all!!
I hope you never again need to loose any other parts of your body other than a fingernail or something!

  14. OMG, I had my subject chosen, photographed and posted before I saw you were 'serving up' your rib! My photos are of my favorite set of dishes! I have to say, yours is really creepy --- but fascinating. I'm really surprised it isn't smoother and lighter color. There is no doubt that this is the most unusual macro!

  15. It's a kind of creepy ... Brrrr ... It's a natural thing, but the thought that it came out of your body is special. Spectacular photo's !

  16. Mwwwwaaaahhhh, can't believe there's anything left of that bone ;)
Both of ours would have torn that thing apart in no time ;)

    Cool macros :D

And I'm game this week too :D

  17. Kind of creepy, but make sure you don't accidentally throw that rib into the pot! lol

  18. Blogging never ceases to amaze me!! what unusual shots, Lisa!

  19. A very special souvenir from your body.......
Stay healthy and take care. :)

  20. Wow, your mom thinks on her feet! And I can't imagine a better reminder of what you've survived so far. Here's to continued good health for you!

  21. Now that's definitely not going to be seen on anyone else's blog! Very fascinating...albeit a bit creepy... it is to look at. If you ever have a house sitter for the pets you'd better make sure to leave instructions about where the dog treats are :-)

  22. Kinda creepy! Make me ache. My hand is still hurting from my bone work.

  23. I think that is the first time I have actually seen a humans rib, that is fascinating although a little gross looking. Reminds me of a ham bone! So happy things turned out for you, hopefully no more surgerys in your future.

  24. MY GOODNESS! I hope you never have to go through that again either!

  25. Oh dear God in heaven. *gag* I think you are safe to say that no one else would want it! :-0

  26. Good one, Lisa. I don't mind the combo; in addition to being a great post and photos, it was really interesting. Was that boyfriend Dennis? I'm glad he didn't freak out. It's good to know these things, up front.

  27. Don't get it mixed up with the other rib bones. Somebody will be complaining they rib didn't have any meat. Never heard of the surgery, or of somebody having part of their own rib in the freezer. Would it have to be in the freezer to keep in good condition?

I have started a 2nd blog, which I will be posting daily. Hope you will come by for a visit, and choose to follow.

  28. Holy missing rib Batman. So they removed part of your lung AND a rib? Double WOW. Did you keep the mass, too? Or because that was an extra part (not an original Lisa) it was OK to get rid of? Just curious.

  29. Amazing story Lisa. Hope your lungs and health are excellent now.

    Best of luck.

  30. Well, now...you don't see THAT everyday!

While it's kinda icky, I can see me having done the same thing; except not for religious reasons but just because I think it's kind of cool. Weird to think about opening the fridge and finding a body part, though!

    :)

  31. I wish I would have known to say that I needed "all my body parts" when I had wrist surgery (scaphoid and lunate disassociated) :) For me this is interesting! Have you seen BodyWorlds exhibit yet...it's fascinating!

Ok, I just entered Macro Monday :)

    Take care!

  32. OMG Lisa, OUch! I did guess it was a piece of bone, and then thought it must be someones as it was in the freezer, but I would not have thought of your ribs! Great pictures as usual!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Wow what a fascinating story . I know people keep their 'stones' but never heard of anyone keeping a rib. When you read mine you will see less interesting body part!

    ReplyDelete
  34. As a physician I got all choked up hearing about that. I imagine it must have been hard and now looking back there is a sense of relief and gratitude at still having that piece of you.

  35. That's like one of those Headlines of the Weird things - "Woman keeps rib in freezer..."
My mom carried a big lightbulb in her purse for a year and I thought that was odd but this really makes that look kinda normal.
I knew there was a reason I felt a kindred spirit with you - you're a really odd duck LOL

    ReplyDelete
  36. So sorry you went through this experience.....but did you have to keep the rib to remember it? Really? I'm sure you would have remembered your hospitalization without the help of the rib, ha!

  37. Is it ok if I say, "ewwwwwwwwwww."

    I mean, it's cool.

    But ... "ewwwwwwwwwwww."

  38. Oh my goodness, you have your rib in your refrigerator, which after second thought is kind of fascinating. I have small pieces of cartilage that came from my son's knee surgery.

I hope that you never have to have lung surgery again either. Take care.

  39. Ewwwww! That definitely qualifies as quirky! What a story!

  40. All I can say is, I'm glad I've already eaten dinner!

  41. Egads, Lisa. Oh, my. You keep it in the FREEZER!

  42. I just discovered your blog today and have spent the entire day off and on reading through it. I love photography and just bought the Canon 50D. I've enjoyed your blog and your pictures!

  43. In case your home is ever searched as a crime scene, may I suggest you label this: "Lisa's rib--it's okay that it's in the freezer!"

  44. Just posted a Macro Monday link...

And, as someone who has kept all my children's baby teeth, various bones of everything from horses, to possums, cattle, sheep, and deer, I can understand keeping that bit of yourself - religious need or not. It's quite fascinating, really. My family doesn't quite get my interest in these sorts of things. We are vegetarian, which might explain a bit of that.

    Thanks for the interesting post....

  45. HOLY SMOKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That is CRAZY!!!!!!!!!! I have a screw that came out of my knee from my 1st ACL...when they did the 2nd ACL 10 years later the doctor gave it to me!!!!! =)

  46. i also hope you don't go through another surgery again... it might seem weird but i find this a "nice" souvenir --- especially with the thought of your boyfriend proposing to a "nut case":)...
