Geocaching while on vacation

lc2196

By now you all know I’m a geocacher. While on vacation we managed to find a few caches along our route and we even found a geocoin or two. For you muggles (non-cachers) out there a geocoin is a coin with a tracking number on it. The owner of the coin lets it loose in a geocache and another cachers picks up the coin and moves it on, and so on. . .

This geocoin we couldn’t resist moving because it looked like our GPSr.

Even the back! Cool, no? Before you ask, we use rechargeable batteries, and yes you see a date on one of them, I label them all when we get them so we know how old they are.

This coin wanted to stay in Maine so we dropped it at the cache we found at this magnificent view. Then we were off to enjoy the beach for a while. . . And find another cache.

The tide was on the way out so we didn’t have to wade too much to get to this cache. In fact, on our way back the guys took the same path and there was no water there.

As we rounded a curve we discovered a surprise!

An old barge. Wonder how long it’s been there.

There was also some old lobster cages. You should have seen me taking this photo. It was very smelly and, well, gross there - so I stood upside down trying to get a decent buoy shot.

We did find the cache and some shells!  We've now found caches in 29 states!  Then it was time for lunch.

Continuing with our caching theme, I insisted we eat here when I saw the name! 44 degrees North has a great salad too!

  5. Lisa this is a great post. I love that you found the abandoned barge. We have one sunk in the Ohio river here. I did a post on it awhile back. John, MyKiah and I have gone geocaching around here and haven't found anything as good as you did. Still I enjoy it very much when we get the chance to go. Have a great day.

  10. These are wonderful photos...I love them. We started geocaching last summer to get my son outdoors and off the computer. I'll have to try that again this summer. Hmmm...I think I'll go suggest it now.

  13. What a cool old barge! That's one of the things I love most about caching - you go poking around places you'd never have thought to look before. And there's almost always a view.
I have the same Garmin GPS and LOVE it.

  14. Don't know much about geocaching, except that it sounds rather adventurous and tons of fun! And it enables you to go out and discover great places, and shoot awesome photographs!

I'd love to meet up in Chicago, some others would like to come too. Maybe we could organize a blogger meeting?
