Hope Cemetery in Barre, Vermont

lc2077

We visited Hope Cemetery in Barre Vermont on a drizzly morning. But I think the drizzle just added to the intrigue.

Most of the granite for America's headstones comes from this part of Vermont. The master artisans of Barre, many Italians who immigrated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, worked the Barre Gray granite blocks into poignant memorial designs. ~ Roadside America

Each stone is more detailed than the last. I love how some of the names appear to be the signature of the person buried there.

I hope you’re getting an inkling of how huge these monuments are.

  18. Very cool images! A long time ago, I worked part-time "setting" headstones in cemeteries, and was intrigued to see all the different shades of granite there are.

  19. Oh Lisa these are incredible. The cubes and violin headstones are my favorite. Who wouldn't want to be buried in this peaceful, most intricate of places? Your photos are great. Have a nice night.

  21. Wow, these headstones are really large and detailed. I don't think I've ever seen a cemetery like this before. Personally, I don't think I want a big computer with my blog featured when I die. :)
