Ruddy Turnstone

IMG_3532

As we were walking along the beach we stumbled, almost literally, across this feeding flyer. I think you can tell he's pretty small if you look at the size of shells against him.

As is typical of many of the birds I came across in Florida, I was clueless as to his name. I thought he looked a lot like a killdeer so I was assuming he was in the plover family.

Well I finally put an identity to him. He's a Ruddy Turnstone, aka Rock Plover. According to my bird book they can be very tolerant of humans when feeding and that was the case here.

I was astonished at how close I was allowed to get!

  5. I love the last photo. Ruddy Turnstone made me think of this: A friend sets you up with a blind date and she has got you to say yes after singing all his many praises but as she turns to walk away, just like our little bird friend in the photo, she says, "Oh, by the way, his name is Ruddy Turnstone" and you just know it's either going to be fantastic or a grand fail, there will be no middle ground.

  7. Fun little photo essay today! I saw my first Ruddy Turnstone on the shores of S. TX and scampered after him down the beach taking pictures as he hunted for tender little morsels! You got some good shots. The Ruddy Turnstone is a pretty little bird. ~karen

  16. I'm very behind in my blog reading, but as I'm going through your FL pics, you're really inspiring me to take a trip there sometime when I'm in the states. I love all the birds you're finding.
