My Snake Wrangler

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

After spending several hours exploring the falls we made our way up into the Adirondack Mountains and found a camping spot at Limekiln Lake State Park. We had a beautiful campsite and enjoyed our night there. If you can believe it, we used cheap swimming pool air mattresses under our sleeping bags and liked them more than our bulky camping air mattresses. Very comfy!

The next morning our path took us by a natural gorge and waterfall and of course we had to stop and hike in to see it. Very pretty!

lc1985

On our way back to the car Haden’s wish was fulfilled - we saw a snake!

lc1986

Apparently, he noticed us too.

lc1987

After I took a few shots, Haden was unleashed and he went to work on catching the unsuspecting fellow.

lc1988

This little snake struggled a lot so it took Haden a few minutes to sooth him. In the above photo he has the head held down because it kept trying to bite.

lc1989

You can see that Haden is very gentle with him.

Finally, boy and snake seem content.

  1. Great photos. It looks like a beautiful place to camp. Sometimes the simplest things are the most effective, even in air mattresses. Such a cute snake.

  7. Glad all hopes were fulfilled! I like snakes too although I don't think I would be capturing a wild one with my bare hands ;0)

  8. Snakes don't creep me out like they do some people, but no holding for me. Love the waterfall.

  9. Haden is one courageous young man. I'm brave enough to get somewhat close for pictures but, not to touch and handle one with that kind of care. Huh, um. Your campground looked spacious and comfortable. Your pool mattress was a good idea. Less time to set them up too, I bet. That waterfall is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing such beautiful pics. Have a great night.

  12. LISA!!!! You drove right by and didn't even stop !! That park is not far from our cottage! It really IS beautiful up there isn't it?? I haven't spent much time there as we're still at the house working on projects that have been put aside for years! Hope to spend a bit of time there in July before we head out again in August on our next Long Road Trip! I loved all your pictures, except I'm not real fond of the snake. I guess it made your son happy though! Glad you guys had a good time and enjoyed our beautiful NY countryside!!

  13. Fabulous photos! There is just something in male DNA that most females do not have...that being the need to pick up snakes & frogs & other wiggling, squirming things. I'm glad the snake obliged Haden by semi-cooperating.

I'm going to try the air mattresses on my next trip.

  15. I knew there was a reason I got a dog and not a snake.

  16. OMG you are so brave!! I would've screamed like a girl. Well, maybe taken a few shots, but I would never let my son near it!! Perhaps I ought to take lessons from both of you...

  18. What a beautiful waterfall. I think I could have sat there for hours/days watching that.

Hayden, you are a brave soul. I had a slug on my deck last night and freaked out. I'm sure I'm a lot of entertainment to my neighbors! LOL

  19. It IS a wonderful shot, but I admit, I'm a wimp when it comes to snakes. I would have fainted on the spot!! What a beautiful trip Lisa!

  20. I'm a sucker for any kind of waterfall. I could stand by them all day.
A boy & his snake. Just that is a whole story. Haden has a lot of snake compassion. Well, that is, after the initial "getting the snake into submission without him biting me before we get there." ~Mary

  23. Is that a garter?

Hayden is amazing with that animal. So beautiful!

We have a garter who lives in our walls. I do believe he takes care of any pests who might otherwise come our way. All we have to do is step over him when he is sunner. That's a fair trade!

  24. Wow, beautiful photos. It looks like you had a lot of fun. I don't think I would have enough courage to get anywhere near a snake!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  25. Beautiful camping spot! And that shot of Haden holding the snake is awesome. :) I used to hold snakes when I was younger, didn't think twice about it. I'm not afraid of them but not sure I'd really want to hold them these days. LOL

  26. oh pugh. as a child I wouldn't touch them because they stink!

  27. I would never have thought that swimming pool mattresses would be better than the air mattresses! I admit I used to love catching snakes as a kid, but now that I am older...I am a wimp!

  28. WOW what a series on handling snakes !!!

I m amazed by the camera angles at which you have photographed the snake, some of them seem to be taken from near eye level with the snake coming towards the camera producing some stunning images. Congratulations Lisa.
