The Snake Saga Continues

Camera Critters 1st Anniversary

lc1991

Haden carefully carried the snake back to the car so I could grab the macro lens.  However, I'm not that fond of snakes so I handed the camera over to Dennis to get these closeups.

His skin has such a pretty pattern!

The snake was then set free.  He quickly got away from us.  But I couldn't help but wonder what the carload of girls would have done if they had stumbled across him on their was past our car.

Did you know that snakes emit a smelly substance when they feel threatened?  Haden was  the lucky recipient of said substance.  He got it on his clothes and the whole vehicle reaked!  We had to pull over so he could change and the clothes were placed in a bag and tied closed.  The car still stunk for the rest of the trip and some smell still lingers.  The clothes have been washed but you can still smell the faint odor.

  1. EW! Now that I know snakes emit a smelly substance I really don't want to touch one! Great shot, though.

  2. As soon as I opened my Reader and saw the picture of the snake, I said, "Eeew." I'm also not a fan of snakes. Once, I was walking barefoot in my backyard and saw large snake. At the time, I was living in a major suburban metropolitan area, so I thought this was a little strange. I immediately ran into the house and called the local animal shelter. After my description, they told me it wasn't that uncommon. In the end, the large black snake, about 3 feet of him, slithered out of the yard. Scared me quite a lot.

Your great shot beings back memories. :)

  6. I didn't know they had an odor defense, interesting to know. As snakes go he's a handsome fella. Great photos!

  7. It is so pretty. I've only come across a skin on a hiking path this spring. Does it smell the same as inside the herpetarium?

  8. Great closeups. I still think Haden is a brave soul for handling a snake. But, I guess all guys are able to do such a thing. As for that smell, Febreeze is great for getting out unwanted odors. Maybe you could give that a try if the smell still lingers. Hope all is well. Have a great day.

  10. Hi Lisa,
So many awesome photos in the last couple entries - but eeeek! LOL! Love the shots at Niagara Falls too. That's one place I've always wanted to go but for some reason have never been there. Hope you're having a great weekend! :-)

  19. Very brave shots! They are great. I can't help it, but snakes are too scary for me. I didn't know that they had a defense system like that. Interesting to find out about it.

  23. Awesome pictures, but thank goodness it didn't have to be me! I once picked up a cat off the road that was just run over and he died in my arms and pee'd all over me. That's enough smelly animal experience for a lifetime.

  26. snakes might have a "bad" image in the western world, but i think they're beautiful in a dangerous sort of way... and i didn't know about the scent snakes emit... and i would be thankful not only for not getting it on my clothes but also for being a safe distance from them (poisonous or not)...

  27. Lisa I once had a huge black snake living in my garage and no one cared! Even the police - yes I went to the police - they told me to put out sticky traps like for mice and it would get caught but what the heck was I going to do with it once it was caught!

Jeanna I can't even describe the smell - it was just bad, kinda musky.

And guys I'm a huge chicken - I think the camera helps me be a little braver - it's all for the blog. :) lol

  28. This evening when I got home and let my 3 Cocker Spaniels out to potty, they discovered "another" snake just off of my patio. I knew it was serious when I saw hackles were up. I gave the command to "Leave it!" and immediately they came to me. I could smell the distinct smell of skunk! Major ULK! My first thought is, "Do I have the ingredients for removing the smell?"
I sure didn't want Delilah to get bite or hurt in anyway, she and Samson are expecting puppies at the end of the month.
Once I got them back inside and my trusty flashlight and hoe, I went hunting. Cottonmouth! This is the 3rd time that we have had one come up from our pond to the house and always on in the same area of the patio and fireplace chimney. I'm so glad that after taking my female to puppy training classes that we had just learned the new command. I had been teaching my other dogs and soon I had to use it when one of these snakes came around. I use it a lot when Delilah's son wants to play with the toads that are around the house all of the time. They put off a nasty taste when he tries to bite one. Those will make them sick. So he knows when I say Leave it, he just sits back and watches intently.
As for myself, I am deathly afraid of snakes as well as tarantulas (another story), but for the sake of my kids when they were young and my dogs I have nerves of steel. But I'm shaking like a leaf inside. And if I were a drinking woman, I would have come in and had a drink. LOL
I did manage to get the snake on the hoe and took it WAY out into the pasture closer to the pond. Hopefully, we won't be seeing it or any of it's friends any way soon, or it will curtains for them.
