What do ducks eat?

IMG_7296

Back when I was eagle watching in Red Wing (click here to see), I discovered something about ducks.  Because these photos aren't that great I haven't wanted to share them, but I really want to know if I'm the only clueless one.  We all know that eagles eat fish (as seen close up in that previous post), but did you know ducks do too?

Am I the only who thought they were eating plants and algae when they went tail feathers up in water?

Ducks are omnivores!  Who knew?

  1. Wow! We have even HAD many ducks that live on our pond, that we've watched very closely.. and NO! I didn't know this! I thought they ate just seeds & plants & the like, too.

  2. I didn't think ducks ate fish but I did know they eat meat. My runner ducks fight over slugs and bugs.

  3. I just learned that this week while vacationing in Florida. We went on a wildlife tour and the naturalist told us about ducks eating fish!

  4. I did not know that. I guess I assumed the duck bill evolved to eat seeds, etc. and not fish. Where these photos taken around Red Wing, Minnesota?
