Washington Ferry

lc2991

Waiting for the ferry.

lc2992

The only way to get to, and from, Washington Island is via ferry. You know how Wisconsin has that little pointy jutting out part? The island is off that point. And from Washington Island you can take another ferry to Rock Island - but the only way to get to Rock Island is to first take the ferry to Washington Island. All clear? lol

Passing a ferry coming in as we are going out. We were leaving Washington Island, and I'm feeling a little loquacious today, can you tell? I got great news yesterday! I'm still in remission! Yay!

lc2995

As we passed this island, I thought it looked pretty cool floating above the water.  Mystical and mythical, just an illusion.

I couldn't tell if this place is occupied or not, but it looks nice, just a little run down. I'd live there. . .but I'm not sure how you get to that island.

A lovely lighthouse! This one is owned by the National Guard. Not sure how you get to that island either.

And passing one last ferry before we dock. Yeah, there's not much out there in Death's Door.

And the seagulls and cormorants were waiting for us.  What a great trip!

  6. You know you really did a disservice to these wonderful photos when you stuck the word "remission" in the middle of the post. You should've put it at the end, 'cause after that nobody's paying attention to the pictures anymore! That's WONDERFUL!

  7. Wow that old house really looks like an interesting place to spend some time! I've always wanted to live right at the water's edge - well until Hurricane season and then I want to live in Vermont LOL

  8. Wonderful news, Lisa!
We never made it to the Door this year :-( We never took the ferry over to Washington Island, either. But I have Death's Door vodka and gin in my bar, lol! I can't wait to get up there again. Would love to come up in the winter.
I know you'll have a wonderful Thanksgiving, you have much to be thankful for!

  10. Wonderful news, Lisa. I am so glad for you. Now - as for the pictures - I love how you have captured that peculiar empty feeling that happens after summer and before the winter sets in.

  11. Great to hear you're still in remission!

Is it just me or are the ferries all empty? The house looks great though. With a good internet connection I could live there as well. I will have to overcome my seasickness of course!

  12. Looks like a fun trip. I liked those old buildings on the island. One could squirrel away there and be happy until a bad storm. Happy to hear you're still in remission. That's great news. Happy Thanksgiving.

  18. When I was in Port St Joe a few years ago (in the gulf region of Florida), we went in a boat and there was a house on the island there as well. I asked about it and the couple we were visiting said that when they were kids they used to go out there and mess around and then finally someone bought it and had tight security around it. It was really cool and I wish I took some pictures of it but didn't.

The light house with the autumn trees is really pretty. My favorite pic. I always enjoy fall pictures.

The photos are beautiful and Washington Island is one of the dearest places I've visited in the US - it's like a step back in time.

  24. Excellent pictures. Years and years ago I took a camping trip to an island up in the UP in Door County where you had to take a ferryt out there and pack all your stuff in and out. It was quite an adventure indeed.
