Beach Bums

IMG_3443

I think I need to spend more time on the beach. ;0) I love how his eye is closed here. It seems dreamy.

IMG_3467

So, I think he's too big to be a Spotted Sandpiper but I'm not really sure what he is. Any ideas?

IMG_3468

Have a closer look.

IMG_3469

Slightly smaller than a gull, but not as small as a sandpiper.

IMG_3470

I think he's cute no matter what he is.

Tiny Sandpiper.

IMG_3500

Remarkable how similar their colors are and structure, almost look like a mom and a babe but I don't think they are.

Some sort of Tern?

How to eat crab

lc2361

As we were leaving Sandy Beach, we discovered a gull eating a crab.

lc2362

lc2363

Or, uh, attempting to eat a crab.

lc2364

lc2365

He finally got hold of it.

lc2366

And as we watched, he ran, then flew. . .

lc2367

And dropped the crab. I think they do this to break into the shell.

lc2368

I don’t think the crab will be attempting to escape after that tumble.

Gull Macro Monday

Macro Monday is easy to play, snap a macro (or any close-up) photo, post it on your blog and come back here and sign Mr Linky. Don't forget to visit each other. :)

lc2245

Some gulls came very close while we were out in the lobster boat in Maine.  I know they were looking for hand-outs but I took advantage of the situation.

lc2246

They swooped. . .

lc2248

. . .and glided . . .

lc2247

. . . and piouretted . . .

lc2249

. . .then floated.

lc2250

Squawk!

lc2251

'Fine if you won't feed me ~ I'm off!'

Following a Gull

lc2204

lc2205

Sometimes it's hard to get the full story with photos alone so I am adding in some words - since so many commentors are voicing their puzzlement. lol  We are following the Gill's path, he's walking down the beach.

lc2206

He turns and looks back at us.

lc2207

Then he passes a form of foreign sealife (which turned out to be a grapefruit skin).

lc2208

He flies a little, and lands on a rock.

lc2209

Next to a Raven/Crow - how the heck do you tell tham apart?

Ringing in Macro Monday

t1245

I think this ring-billed gull wants to go home with me.

t1248

t1247

Or, maybe not. What do you think he’s saying?

t1249

Is that so?

t1250

t1251

Boy, he’s almost as loquacious as I am! Too bad I don’t speak 'gull'.

t1252

One more yell, then. . .

t1253

He turned and walked away.
