Pet Cemeteries

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

pet cemetery

Way in the back of a couple of human cemeteries in central Wisconsin I found pet sections, or Pet Land.

I wonder if that's Brandy's paw print.

All of the stones in this pet cemetery are flat. But I think it's so neat that these pets were so important to someone that they have their own space and stone.

pet cemetery

So detailed! They seem unlikely friends, but I bet they were.

Muffin looks a little scary but I bet she wasn't.

Puddy Cat

I even found Pee Pee

And Pooper.

The second cemetery doesn't have a sign, but has flat and tall stones; you could almost not notice it was a pet section, if you didn't read the stones.

Shadow, Brownsville PD K-9, is amongst friends here.

The biggest stone belongs to a rescue dog.

Joplin is the town where I grew up, the place my kids were born.

Snuggles was the sheltie that liked to dress up.

While the areas are mostly filled with dogs and cats, I did find some bunnies.

  3. So touching...all our pets got buried in the back yard since there were no such things as pet cemeteries back then...

  4. That is very touching. Pets are part of the family too, and we mourn when they pass.

  7. Thats sweet and scary all at the same time! I dread the day one of our pets passes, can't imagine them not being here anymore!

  8. Those are great! I had to read every single one, then I started thinking about my long lost pups from my youth. We buried them behind our shed at my parents house. I miss my dogs :( Great post and as usual AWESOME pics!!!

  9. When my seventeen year old cat died, we buried her over at my parents house. I know where she is, and whenever I come there, I just have to visit that little spot and say hi to her!

  10. A very nice tribute to Pet Land. AS I am sure many said, Pooper, Pee Pee and Puddy Cat were too funny!! All of our lost pets are buried in our backyard. Close to home.

    Thanks for sharing!

  11. I still have the ashes of "Karl Von Schwatz"
We thought we would incorporate them with a stone in our garden. Just hasn't happened.

He loved Yellowhawk Creek. I've thought about spreading them there.

  12. Glad folks have a proper place for their loved ones.

The dogs my parents have owned are buried in my parents' yard (large country lot). The dogs in DH's family are buried on the family-owned hunting land, where the dogs spent their favorite times.

I saw your snow photos from last weekend. Beautiful :)

  13. This made me cry. I have four pet children and the movie Marley & Me has had me emotional this month. My fiancee and I want to see the movie, but don't want to be reminded that we will lose our fur-babies eventually. This blog reminded me of that too. Having said that, the pet cemetery you found is beautiful. Those pets were really loved. Their tombstones are beautiful.

  18. This was a very unique post! It is sad to read all of these, but when you stop and think about it. Pets really are members of our families and it is very nice that these families felt so touched that they laid them to rest peacefully and with dignity. Truly a touching tribute, Lisa!

  20. Most of these were kinda sweet, but Snuggles, "The Sheltie who liked to dress up" really creeps me out. Did you notice that Pee Pee and Pooper seem to have belonged to the same people? I'm not surprised.

On one of the ways I take into Wichita I pass a pet cemetery. The place looks a little run down from the highway, and there's an old, creepy looking limo parked under a carport out front. Someday I think I'll have to go check it out.

  21. Oh Lisa...this made me weepy, especially the police K-9 markers. Beautiful pics, thank you! I'm playing catchup...I had some sort of a jinx on me last week (I wrote about it in excruciating detail) and I'm hoping I'll do better with visiting and commenting this week.

  22. Ohmygosh Lisa ... what a WONDERFUL post! I've never wandered a pet cemetery (in fact Stephen King's book of the same title comes to mind and makes me shiver), but the love illustrated here warms my heart ... and I confess Pee Pee and Pooper made me laugh aloud.
    Hugs and blessings,
