The Rav4 has been displaced from the garage since we brought the Fiat home. Little Fiat has taken its share from the middle as it got work done on it. Now, finally all painted and down to interior, I made room for the Rav again! Yay!  Once we get the interior all done I'll share photos all over the little thing. :)

You'll have no idea when you look at this photo how much trouble I went to to get it. I saw a small spider (about the size of a pencil eraser) hanging from a single thread. I went in and got my macro lens, and tripod - oh I loath a tripod. When I came back out all I saw was the thread. I waited. . .suddenly he emerged from under a flower and he went up, then down, then up, then down, for at least ten minutes I tried to track this tiny being with no success.

Finally, he took a breather, in the area that appeared to be the center of all his lines.  To get a good focus on this tiny creature I had to use a very long exposure (the sun was fading fast) and hold my breath while the wind blew him gently (not good for a long exposure).  It took several attempts to get one this clear.

I continued to watch him as he moved again, this time, round and round.  He was amazingly quick!  I would guess I stood transfixed for nearly an hour, even watching after darkness fell and moths almost became dinner.  I'm not keen on spiders, but behind the lens I'm brave; I do appreciate his dedication to his task.  Sometimes, things are worth all the effort poured into them.

What's been keeping us so busy lately

We brought this 1979 Fiat 2000 Spider home to fix up and play with.



Currently it looks like this ... well she used to be cute. She will be even better when done.

BTW: Fiat 500 will be coming to the US this December, I would really like to see Qubo come over though.

Macro Monday ~ Spider and Fly

Sometimes when looking at flowers through the macro lens I find neat little surprises.

Then my focus changes from the inanimate to the moving thing before me. Like this fly sipping from the raindrop.

Or this spider looking for a spot to sun itself.

Distractions

It seems my yard is full of life! Watching creatures find and build suitable homes for themselves and their eggs is quite amazing! Checking up on them daily to see how things are going helps keep my mind on the future, on the way things keep moving on. I've never seen a spider so protective! She has been in the same spot for days. Such dedication! I bet the eggs feel safe and secure, protected from the world! I know I appreciate the people fighting my battle with me, the understanding and security they provide is one of the best gifts! I wonder how long it takes for spider eggs to hatch. It feels good to distract myself with wonderings of nature!

Look closer

It's funny that before my cancer diagnosis I really wasn't interested in photography. Sure I took some photos, but they were quick snapshots, proof that I had been somewhere, or documenting my children growing. After going through chemo, my eyes opened to the world around me and I became interested in trying to capture my view, with the hopes of waking others up.  Too many of us walk through our days unseeing.

I have grown fond of my macro lens, never knowing what details I'll find in some of the simplest things.  I didn't see the spider on the bud when I began to snap some photos of the emerging flower in a gentle rain. Only after lining up a few shots did I discover the 1/4 spider lapping up the rain droplets.

Brown Pelicans and Black Vultures

As we went to find a campsite in Flamingo (Everglades National Park) a ranger told us about the crocodile that had been on the opposite bank and we went to look for him. We never did see a Florida crocodile, just lots of alligators. But we found some pelicans. The fellow above is a juvenile Brown Pelican.

I think he's pretending to be a statue.

I find it funny that the adult Brown Pelicans aren't really brown.

We had a little bit of time to look around before dark. Haden found this spider.

I'm pretty sure this isn't blood in the water, such a large area was this color we're thinking there's some mineral or something making the water red. Very odd.

Before leaving the park the next morning we stopped to walk a trail and take some bird photos. We were surprised to see signs warning about black vultures attacking/damaging vehicles. Near one of the signs was this vulture strung up, I assume as a warning to other vultures.

I don't think it works, lol.

I don't find them near as creepy as the turkey vultures we have at home.

Macro Monday Spidey

Do you see what I see? He's on a picnic table, you can see the crack on the slats that make it up - so he's pretty small.

Haden's wonderful eyes found him at one of our campsites in the Everglades.

I like his thorny crown.

But I'm still not much into spiders, lol.

Hello, tiny friend.

I had no idea why this spider was so riled up at first.

It quickly became apparent, it's lunch time. He has an aphid in his mouth - he's a small spider.

He was fascinating to watch!

He has the weirdest eyes! Those little black balls that are barely attached to his head. Weird.
