It's amazing, to me, that turtles move slow enough to grow moss on their backs.

Check out those mossy rocks!
Why, those aren’t rocks at all.
There were turtles popping up all over this small pond.
Tiny turtles.
And a frog watched on.
When I was a child I would hold dear anything made of rabbit fur. My favorite toy in the whole world for most all of my childhood was a cat made of rabbit fur and I rubbed it on my face for comfort and soothing. This precious bunny looks soft enough I wouldn't mind taking him home.
The zoo we went to a while back had two small areas that you could go into with the animals. The first cage was the bunnies but there were so many I was afraid I'd step on one. In the second cage was a lone tortoise and I tentatively stepped in. However, I had my huge honking lens on and the requirements of that lens is a minimum focusing distance of about 5'.
Well, that was a bit of a challenge in a 10' square pen with a tortoise that kept wanting to touch me. Boy he was fast!
I think he needs some chapstick.
There was something in the middle of the road. Hubby threw the car into park and out we jumped, cameras in hand. The lens you see up there is the fisheye (on the Canon 5D) and if you scroll down to the bottom you can see one of the shots Dennis took. He really was only a couple of inches from the turtle; the neat thing about the fisheye is you can be really close.
The turtle willingly stopped and posed for his paparazzi.
He even waved at the camera.
I guess he was waving ‘bye’, cuz then he was off like a flash, well, uh actually more like a tortoise.
I snapped a few close ups, from a distance, if that makes sense. I was using the Canon 40D with the huge honkin lens (100-400mm), too lazy to take it off after birding.
I love the moss on his shell (it gives him character) and the stripe on his eye that matches his body.
As promised, here’s one of Dennis’s photos and me in the background, about five feet from Mr Turtle, as that’s as close as I can be to focus with that huge lens. Sidenote - You see that is the bad thing about his using the fisheye, it has 180 degree view so I have to be slightly behind him or I will be in the shot. And honestly, when we plan a day in the woods taking photos I don't exactly dress up for a photo, afterall, I'm supposed to be behind the camera, not in front of it.
Turtles are pretty common along Missouri roads and we happened upon this guy on a dead end road so I was able to take a few moments to admire him. I don’t know if you can tell, but he’s pretty good size.
When I moved that rock from in front of him he decided to retreat and peek.
{Snake alert for Aims}
We decided to try to find a cache at Jolly Mill but as we crossed the bridge (the bridge we were on is the third photo from the top) we saw this swimming in the water below.
This water moccasin (western cottonmouth) was no baby either, he was big, and he wasn’t alone, we counted three of them.
See the fish below him? How cool.
That is one huge crawdad!
There were some nests on the bottom side of the bridge, and hanging out of one was. . .a snake skin! EEEK! I’m outta here!
Btw: we did NOT go after the cache.
