The dessert communication table

DSCF2534

Here we have our Thanksgiving dessert table.  It's really hard to gather up the kids once they too become adults, but it's really nice that everyone gets rid of the distractions in order to spend time with each other. :0)  Oh and they put up with my decorate-your-own-sugar-cookie bar with only a little eye rolling, a reminder they are no longer children and a request for more icing colors, lol.

Yeah it's a habit with us - this one was taken February 2009 at Mikal and Amy's place. :0)

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I am very thankful for each one of you!

I have been having some internet connection problems, but think I may have narrowed the problem down to my wireless card - hoping my connection will be less sporadic very soon.

Hands up!

lc3193

Things have been a little chaotic around here lately and I almost forgot to share the ornaments I made out of the grandkids hands. Rather than trace around their hands multiple times I traced them each once on paper, then used it as a template on the dough. I used an exacto knife to cut the dough and a straw to make the hole for ribbon to be inserted. I then used a sharpie to write their name and Christmas 2009 on the back of the ornament.

Camp Angel

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

lc1198

The kids had a great time at Camp Angel. Although they all have an immediate family with cancer their weekend is about having fun. Getting away from it and spending time in the rocking chair room, spending time getting to know some animals and rock climbing.

Doing crafts and getting their faces painted.

Snowshoeing, when the weather finally warmed up a little from the -14 degrees we woke up to.

Riding on snowmobiles on the lake.

Thumbs up! Think they’re having fun!

lc1205

Sledding.

This little boy wiped my husband out. Camera’s fine, and laughs all around.

They also got to ride in a horse drawn sleigh and on dog sleds! Needless to say they all went home exhausted. It’s one of the best things Angel on My Shoulder does. And it’s free for them to come!

Leopard Lily falls while SeeSawing

colorful morning

Well okay, I admit it, this photo is from last fall. But I tell ya, with all the yellows and reds I’m starting to see amongst the green it won’t be long and this’ll be here. This makes some people kinda cranky because they know. . .

. . .these days aren’t far behind. (side note - the snow was knee deep in areas and when I fell, somehow twisted my legs and could not get up, Dennis took the camera from around my neck and snapped before helping me up)

Thanx to Misti and SwampAngel, I now know that my mystery plant is a Leopard Lily (Ledebouria socialis) and it comes from South Africa. I love how full it is getting but am feeling a little guilty, like maybe I should divide it up.

This little sweetheart has given me my newest nickname, and I have to say it is one of my favorites. In fact, I like my new name SO much that I thought about changing my blog to SeeSaw’s Chaos. SeeSaw describes me in more ways than she could possible understand right now.

My tv and my bed swapped places and now the tv seems so far away, how in the heck can that be?

Tristan and his mom and dad left for vacation a few days ago, they made it to Chicago about 9pm and then a very panicked Britney rang my phone. She was the most hysterical I have ever heard! They were on the I90 toll way when their car died, just died in the one of the middle lanes. Well, it was dark and they had no clue if their lights were working and she was terrified they were going to be rear-ended.

I absolutely understand her fear and my stomach quickly turned to think of them being in that situation and me being four hours away and unable to help. A police officer did come along and help them get out of the way. To keep a long story short, there were lots of phone calls and a trip to an auto store, where it was determined to be the fuel filter that was causing issues and by midnight they were back on the road.

After the long drive to Pennsylvania Tristan wants nothing else to do with the car. I sure hope he can handle it one more time to come back home, I’m missing the little booger!

Yes, smelling the flowers means putting the flower in your eye!  Have you been doing it right?

'Tornado Warning' - Reactions

How did I raise 4 children so different from each other? Maybe they are samples of all my multiple personalities?

flower

Below you will find each of my kids’ normal, every day, reactions to being told that a tornado is on the way. I only had my A-HA moment today (yeah, I’m slow that way) when a tornado did touch down in Wisconsin Rapids, a nearby town. And first I must tell you that I have two fabulous sons, who always call to check on mom during bad weather.

I was raised in tornado alley and am very familiar with them. I have what I would call, a normal fear of them. If told there is a warning I will stay home and keep my ears and eyes open. I do not run to the basement but will be prepared to if the need arises. My hubby is the same way. . . well except that time we chased a hurricane in Texas.

Time 1 pm - Me: There’s a tornado warning and a tornado was spotted on the ground in Wisconsin Rapids so keep your eyes open.

  • Britney: Well it doesn’t seem that bad out. It’s just raining a little, no wind. . .Ok, I’m going to the store, talk to ya later.

  • Mikal: Yeah I know, Amy and I have been watching the weather channel since midnight and have taken all of our bedding into the bathroom (with the tv and cat), we’ve been in here since 8 am. We think we’re going to just sleep in here tonight. Do you think it would be safe to open the door and walk the 5 feet to the kitchen to quickly grab some food? Of course, we’ll eat it in the bathroom. I’ll call you every hour to make sure you’re ok.

  • Gage (who lives in a second floor apartment): Oh ok. Well, I think we’ll just go over to my girlfriend’s mom’s house, she has a basement. Call me when it’s over so I’ll know you’re ok.

  • Haden: I’m going outside to see if I can see it. Can we go to Rapids?

Truths may have been exaggerated just a tad, but isn’t it amazing the differences in four children raised by the same mother?

BTW, we’re all fine.

Double BTW (can I do that?, well I guess I can, it’s my blog), the pictures have absolutely nothing to do with this post.

A mom never worries enough

As a mom, with kids leaving the nest you imagine all possibilities of the things that might go wrong. You worry incessantly about them and the trials they may face starting out. In amongst those many worries you miss one.

I never thought I would be told, “They almost had to amputate my arm.” Not only that, but I didn’t get told of the incident for 2 days!

My middle son, Gage (Khristiaan), moved out a few months ago. He only moved about a mile from home and he waited until he had been working long enough that he paid his first 6 months rent when he signed his lease. Pretty impressive. There was no anger with the move, in fact I helped him. I know he just wanted to spread his wings, or have a girlfriend over. . .you know. Wanting his independence I drove him nuts calling too frequently in the beginning, a mother’s worries you know?

But over the last few months I talk to or see him about once a week and he answers my calls since I don’t call as often. Heck he even calls me now. But I was not prepared for the call I got last week. He told me that he cut his arm.

Of course, my first thought is that he cut it at work, my second that there was alcohol, “messing around” and stupid kids involved. The second choice was the correct one.

A boy, holding a butcher knife was shoved, bumped into, whatever and when he fell forward the knife caught Gage’s arm. A 911 call was made, an ambulance summoned and he was rushed to the hospital covered in blood, where he received 18 stitches and was told that if it had only been a fraction of an inch deeper they would have had to amputate.

Why amputation? Because you could see the tendons moving in his arm, luckily no tendons were severed. If the tendons had been severed apparently they would have had to amputate.

When I asked him how long it was he replied, “2 inches” but what he was telling me I found out later was that the skin was pulled back about two inches - the width, or gap of the cut. The cut itself in truth is a little over 3 inches long.

The night he called and told me about this I could not sleep. I lay awake most of the night fretting and worrying and feeling utterly helpless as the mother of an adult child. He almost lost his arm! He didn’t tell me for 2 days! I saw him the next night and he let me snap a shot of the cut. Looks very painful no? Did he learn anything? I hope so.

cut arm

This photo was taken a week after the cut and right before he went to get the stitches out. He now has steri-strips (butterfly bandages) along the incision. And it looks like it’s healing good.

His brother, Haden the king of stitches, is extremely jealous and envious as he has only had 13 stitches at one time. WTF?! I hope I never get a phone call like that one again. And I learned that the one thing you are not worrying about is the one thing that will happen.

Added:  I forgot to say that he had no numbing at all.  He refused all needles other than the one used to stitch with.
