Happy Father's Day!

IMG_8192

Hope all the fathers out there have a wonderful Father's Day!

IMG_8210

These are just some more birds I found while poking around in Louisiana, lol.

IMG_8217

Most of these I don't find up in Wisconsin.

rough legged hawk soaring

IMG_0324

Watching him soaring above simply took my breath away.  We need more take-your-breath moments in our lives!

There are several rough legged hawks hanging around nearby. We've been seeing the lighter ones, like this guy, and some of the darker versions. The darker ones look a lot like a crow while sitting in the top of a tree, then they spread their wings and you see the white underside the wings.

I cropped this one a bit so you could maybe see better how beautiful he is. I watched him for the longest time!

Louisiana birds

IMG_8195

There were two of these on the side of the road, one flew off but I managed to catch one of them.

We enjoyed City Park in New Orleans and the birds did too.

Rough-legged Hawk

IMG_6273

We see hawks quite often, but this time we were able to pause and I could snap a few shots. Dennis drove slowly by him as I shot out the window just praying for something to come out.

IMG_6281

He kept his eyes on me but I was sad the branches were in the way.

IMG_6283

However, we have learned, do not stop. If you stop the car to shoot the shots. . .

. . .this is what happens. :(

Birds of Prey eating

PhotoStory Friday
Hosted by Cecily and MamaGeek

LC0355

The last time we were at the Manitowoc zoo we were lucky enough to be there at feeding time for the birds of prey. You might be grossed out by these so don't say you weren't warned. While I was a little grossed out, I also found it very interesting.

LC0356

The Bald Eagle gobbled all his mice up very quickly!  See, one in each claw and two in the throat.

LC0357

See he has another in his mouth even though you can still see the tail of the previous one.

LC0358

Almost done.

LC0359

And with a full tummy he is done with us.

LC0361

Go away I say! I thought owls were the only ones able to turn their heads all the way around.

LC0362

The zoo keeper laid the mice on this log for the hawk.

LC0363

He was a little more hesitant to eat.

LC0364

So while we waited for him to decide to eat we walked around and saw the owl (those pictures will be up tomorrow).

LC0366

When we came back around he had a mouse in his talons.

LC0365

Bye bye mousey.

LC0367

I guess he decided to ignore us and have his dinner. Glad I'm not a mouse!

Boys and Bows

DPP_0714

You may remember seeing this cake (DQ of course) a few days ago. We had thought we would take Haden camping for his birthday but with the weather we keep having we wussed out. We did however take him to the Archery Range to sight his new bow.

DPP_0715

Dennis needed to sight his too. I guess this is when they adjust the little dealybobber to where they can hit the bull’s-eye.

DPP_0716

Looks like they need a little more adjusting.

DPP_0720

I quickly got bored and went in search of critters.

DPP_0718

I found a singing sparrow.

DPP_0719

Boring.

DPP_0703

But then a tiny frog came hopping by. He stopped long enough to say hello!

DPP_0722

And as Haden was doing this, I looked up and. . .

DPP_0721

. . . a hawk soared above.

DPP_0723

I’m not so sure Haden noticed.

DPP_0724

While the ants busily built their home,

DPP_0717

Haden practiced on. In fact we left him there, maybe we’ll pick him up next year.
