I was not really sure if I could come up with any little bits of trivia as the ladies over at Mama Drama requested. I can't remember my name half the time so I really don't remember anything unimportant from school. It took me quizzing some family members to come up with a few tidbits to share.
Years ago the kids and I gave my mom some fire bellied toads and mom has found out that only the males makes noise and it’s a barking noise. Also, they typically mate during storms.
Did you know that butterflies smell with their antennae and taste with their feet?
Did you know that flies can buzz without wings?
I also found out that the plastic (or metal) thing on the end of shoelaces is called an aglet, or aiglet.
With the exception of the aglets, I dug into my archives for the photos and they were all taken before my life with a digital SLR, in my days of point-and-shoot.
Update: I remember something from grade school - 'Able was I ere I saw Elba' - said by Napolean and a sentence that if you flipped it over would still read the same.
Also - 8 times 8 fell on the floor, picked it up and it was 64.
9x1=09
9x2=18
9x3=27
9x4=36
9x5=45
9x6=54
9x7=63
9x8=72
9x9=81
9x10=90
And to multiply the 9s all you have to do is write 0-9 all the way down, then come back up with 0-9 and you have the answers, 09, 18,27 - make sense?
Now I know what to get annoyed at when I lose that little plastic thingey on the end of my show laces! Dang aiglet!

ReplyDeleteI always love to add to my store of useless information, so thank you! I didn't know about the butterflies or the flies, but, believe it or not I did know that the little plastic tips on the ends of shoelaces are called -- I can't remember HOW I know, though!

ReplyDeleteActually, I did know about how flies still buzz without their wings. When we were kids, my cousin the sadist caught a housefly and tore off its wings, but it continued to buzz. Until then, I'd always assumed the buzzing was caused by their wings.

Great pictures of the butterfly. Before I leave on my trip I am going to try to post some pretty pics I took at a park in Springfield. One is of a butterfly like this one. I also saw the first monarch yesterday so will try to shoot one before they migrate.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't aware of the rule of nines, but it makes sense. Each product is a transposition of another product of 9. And when balancing, say, a checkbook and the number you're off by is divisable by 9 there is a transposition somwhere. Even that a computer can't do for us!

You can keep going with that nine thing too. I have to figure it out after 100 each time, but if you look at those numbers, the other thing you will notice, is each pair also adds up to nine, as in 3 and 6 is nine as is 7 and 2 etc. If you go past 10, your numbers add up to 18. For instance, 11 x 9 is 99 and 12 x 9 is 108 (10 and 8 is 18), and 13 x 9 is 117. You can also see, that each beginning number is 2 less than the one you are multiplying by 9 (as in 12x 9, 10 is 2 less than 12). By listing the numbers down in order you have 10, 11, 12, and the other numbers go up. This is why I have to figure it out every time; because I haven't committed all the rules to memory. When you get to the next round of numbers, the numbers add up to 27, and the difference between the first digits and the one you are adding is 3, instead of 2. So 21 x 9, you drop 3 from the 21 to get 18, then add 9 to get 27 so you would have 189. 34 x 9, you drop 4 (because your you are in the 30s) and get 30 and now you have to make 36 so the answer is 306. Another, 58 x 9, you drop 6 to get 52 and you have to get 54 so your answer is 522. And one last one, 73 x 9, take off 8 to get 65 and it has to add to 72 so you get 657. It is so cool, it works every time. Check with the calculator, I did them in my head (then checked, so I didn't look like an idiot). Hah, and you thought I was too busy to play useless little math games.
