We have the opposite graveyard near here, all the grave markers are flush with the ground. It's kinda spooky. Excellent photos.
It's a popular fiction that the above ground tombs are due to the water table and associated issues. In fact, the practice arises out of French and Spanish traditions, which speaks then, to the origins of New Orleans and the habit of its founders.
Brilliant use of selective color in these...love the blue beads around the statue!
I do think they have the neatest looking graves there. I remember being struck by that when I visited years ago.
