They bring questions to mind. Why do some bees have dark bottoms and some not so much? Why are some stripes more pronounced and some barely noticeable? Is the butterfly the same colors as the bees just trying to blend in? Why does the butterfly have a tiny body and huge wings, while the bee has small wings for its chubby body? Is there nectar in unopened buds?

  5. When I saw the title of your post I thought "If anyone can photograph a bee's knees it will be Lisa!" LOL Those pics are great. They are so crisp you can see how furry bees are. I've always wondered if they feel furry but I haven't wanted to know bad enough to actually touch one.
My oldest son and I studied flowers last year and yes there is nectar in an unopened bud and bees can get to it!

  17. I had a bad bee experience a couple years ago...and...I don't like them much. BUT, I respect them and what they do. Scares me to think of what will happen if they all die out...

  19. these photos are great!!! i really love taking photos of little winged creatures (i get lucky from to time)... about your questions, their body shape and color might be to differentiate them from one colony to the other (or sub-specie), or to blend, or both... and as for the buds having nectar, maybe the bees are just canvassing which ones they will visit when these buds bloom:)...
